Our History

Welcome to Basil, the culinary community that started with a simple idea and a passion for cooking. Eddy and Travis, the founders of Basil, they had a vision of bringing people together through food and the art of scratch cooking. Their journey began with a desire to create a culinary club where people could come together to learn, share and experience the joys of cooking with fresh, local ingredients.

Through community feedback and engagement, their initial idea evolved into the creation of Basil – a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather to celebrate the culinary arts and enjoy delicious meals. At Basil, we are committed to using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, supporting our local farmers, and promoting sustainable practices that benefit our environment.

As a community-focused organization, we understand the importance of giving back. That’s why our kids’ cooking classes are 100% non-profit. All the proceeds go towards supporting good causes and helping those in need. We believe that food is a universal language that has the power to bring people together, regardless of their differences.

In today’s world, where divisiveness and conflict seem to be prevalent, we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone is welcome. Our philosophy can be summed up by the iconic Bob Marley quote – “One love, one heart, let’s get together and feel alright.” This phrase is at the heart of our concept, and we embrace it as a way of life.

At Basil, we are committed to providing a warm, welcoming and safe space where people can connect and share their love of food. We invite you to join us on this journey, and be a part of our culinary community. Whether you’re a seasoned chef, a foodie or just starting your culinary journey, we have something for everyone. Thank you for considering Basil, and we look forward to sharing our love of food with you.

Our Chefs

Travis Wong

A talented chef whose passion for cooking was ignited at a young age in his family’s restaurant. His early experiences instilled in him a deep appreciation for the artistry and discipline required to create truly exceptional cuisine. After honing his skills in some of Colorado’s most celebrated restaurants, Travis returned to his hometown of Bismarck, North Dakota in 2005. It wasn’t long before his talents caught the attention of the local food scene, and he quickly became the chef at several popular restaurants in the area. Of all his culinary endeavors, Travis is perhaps best known for his time at The Toasted Frog, where he made a name for himself with his signature dishes and creative approach to cooking. After a hiatus from the kitchen, Travis has returned to the culinary world with a renewed passion and an expanded repertoire. He now shares his extensive knowledge and expertise with the community through cooking classes, where he inspires others to discover their own culinary talents. Along the way, he met Eddy, a fellow food enthusiast with natural cooking talent, and together they founded Basil. With Travis’ expertise and Eddy’s passion, Basil brings tradition, quality, and creativity to the table.

Eddy Yuja

Growing up as an Army brat, Eddy’s life has been a journey of exploration and discovery, leading him to his passion for food. After serving in the Army and settling down in North Dakota with his wife, Eddy found that cooking was an excellent way to meet new people and connect with his community. With no prior professional cooking experience, Eddy spent eight years honing his culinary skills and experimenting with different flavors and techniques. It was during this time that he met Travis, his business partner and fellow food lover. Eddy’s blank canvas allowed Travis to train and mold him into an excellent teacher, and together, they have built a strong community of food enthusiasts around Basil. Today, Eddy’s passion for cooking and his dedication to sharing his knowledge with others have made him an integral part of the Basil team, and an inspiration to aspiring cooks everywhere.
